Importance of Caution in Exploring Psychedelic Medicines in Psychotherapy The integration of psychiatric medicines with psychotherapy has been successful, enabling therapies that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. There is a growing interest in using psychedelic medicines as adjuncts in therapy, as seen in a recent webinar by the International Psychoanalytic Association. Despite the potential benefits, it is crucial to approach this area with caution due to the complexity and individualization required in creating a psychoanalytic frame tailored to each patient’s needs. Transcript: Speaker 2 Now, we’ve been down this road before in a sense in that we have learned to introduce psychiatric medicines of a more familiar sort as adjuncts to dynamic psychotherapy. And For many individuals, their therapies wouldn’t be possible, were it not in conjunction with psychiatric medicines. There is great interest in this area of psychedelic medicines as adjunct. The Health Committee of the IPA, the International Psychoanalytic Association, recently held a webinar on the topic of the interface between psychedelic medicines and psychoanalysis. I was pleased to be the moderator of this webinar and we had four guests who are leading researchers and clinicians in this field. We had participants from over 40 countries. There’s something very important for us to learn about. And I think it’s also important that we begin our conversation with a caution. You and I both know that it takes many years of clinical work to learn how to co -create a psychoanalytic frame that’s attuned to each individual’s capabilities. (Time 0:09:11)
