Since these DIY courses are such an effective—not to mention exciting—form of self-directed study, I want to go over how to design a DIY course syllabus that gives you a learning experience which approximates what you might have in a professor’s college classroom.

A DIY course is a self-study syllabus that is self-made and self-directed. It gives you a structured way to self-learn one specific topic you’re interested in, outside of school. To make one, you’ll outline the learning goals, the material you’ll study, the methods you’ll use to study them, and any self-testing assignments, essays, or schedules.

you’re doing assignments that force you to more deeply understand the material—basically all the stuff you’d do in a real university course, but designed in a way that aligns with your interests and learning style.

I like to organize my course around a big question, often composed of several smaller questions that interest me.

When creating a DIY course, I like to get some inspiration from publicly available syllabi before creating my own. Most professors put a lot of thought and expertise into crafting their syllabi, so if I can find a course online related to my topic, that can save me a lot of time. I can steal from it what I like, and find book recommendations that I trust, which does a lot to prevent the doubt that often lingers over autodidacts studying something on their own. My favorite site for finding these syllabi is MIT OpenCourseWare, which contains hundreds of undergrad and graduate-level university syllabi across many subjects.

Hold you accountable to study, not just consume. If you make the test public, like a YouTube explainer video or a blog post, you’ll hold yourself to an even higher standard.
