Mothers were asked to interact normally with their infants for 2 min. Followind the initial play period, mothers were signaled to avert their gaze for 15 s, after which they turned back to their infant with an emotionless or neutral face (i.e., still-face episode). Mothers were asked to maintain this appearance for 2 min and not to touch or talk to their child. After 2 min, mothers were signaled to look away for 15 s once again, and then reengage with their infants (i.e., reunion episode); the reunion episode lasted for 1 min.
